ACADEMICS
Research Postgraduates in BIEN involve the completion of coursework and independent research, and successful defense of thesis. The normative periods of study are as follows:
Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
- 2 years for full-time
- 4 years for part-time
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
- 4 years with a first degree only
- 3 years if a relevant research master’s degree was earned prior to entering the PhD program
- 8 years for part-time
All lectures and materials are in English.

- Restrictive bioengineering electives (3 credit)
- Non-restrictive electives to be determined by supervisor based on relatedness to the research project (6 credits]
- Biological course requirement for non-life science background student
- Other program requirements: LANG5005, PDEV6770, PDEV6800, ENGG6780, BIEN6800, 1 presentation at seminar
- Addition to the existing program requirement: Scientific Computation Concentration (SCC)
- Core (6 credit): BIEN5010 or BIEN5040 or BIEN5060 or BIEN5070 or BIEN 5820 or CENG5240
- Elective (9 credits) :
- Restrictive bioengineering electives (3 credit)
- Non-restrictive electives to be determined by supervisor based on relatedness to the research project (6 credits] in which a 3-credit course at 5000-level or above outside the PhD (BIEN) program to meet school requirement
- PhD Qualifying Examination (pass within the first 1.5 years of study)
- Biological course requirement for non-life science background student
- Other program requirements: LANG5005, PDEV6770, PDEV6800, ENGG6780, BIEN6800, 2 presentations at seminar
- Addition to the existing program requirement: Scientific Computation Concentration (SCC)
When students have completed the degree requirements for an award, or are registered in courses that will complete the requirements for an award, they will be included in the list of potential graduates.
Students must complete the coursework requirement specified for the MPhil/PhD program during your degree study and attain a pass in the thesis examination.
At graduation, a graduation grade average (GGA) will be calculated from the courses that are presented for an academic award. The GGA for graduation for all postgraduate programs must at least be 2.850.
