Undergraduate Minor Program in Bioengineering

Overview

Bioengineering is the bridge between the basic life sciences and engineering. It is broad in its spectrum, with its foundation in all the engineering sciences as well as biology, biotechnology, medical and health sciences. The goal of this minor program is to stimulate students' interests and develop their knowledge and skills in bioengineering. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of bioengineering, the program is structured to encourage students to

1) widen their scope of learning to encompass different areas of science and engineering;

2) integrate the principles in biology and engineering in a specific application direction.

This program also intends to foster a collaborative environment among different schools and departments to contribute to the development of a strong interdisciplinary program in HKUST.

Area of Concentration

The Bioengineering Minor Program has three areas of concentration, they are

Bioprocessing

The demand for new and improved commercial products will be met through bioprocessing, a type of advanced manufacturing that involves chemical, physical, and biological processes employed by living organisms or their cellular components. Bioprocessing enables the translation of research discoveries into commercial products with unique and highly desirable characteristics and offers new production opportunities for a wide range of items, including energy sources such as ethanol and methane; commodity chemicals, such as enzymes; polymers for films and coatings; and improved high-value products, such as pharmaceuticals and health supplements.

Biological informatics and data processing

Biological informatics and data processing involve the use of techniques from applied mathematics, informatics, statistics and computer science to solve biological problems. Biological informatics can be applied in area such as sequence alignment, gene finding, genome assembly, protein structure alignment, prediction of gene expression, protein structure and protein-protein interactions and the modeling of evolution.

Applied Bioscience

Applied Bioscience enhances the existing knowledge and understanding of biosciences, within the context of applications in biomedical, health and food sciences. The knowledge of fundamental bioscience could be applied in the design of biomicrosystems and biomedical instruments.

Enrollment Requirements

Any undergraduate students at HKUST with a minimum CGA of 2.15 or above may enroll in the Bioengineering Minor Program.

Curriculum Requirements
Graduation Requirements

To graduate with a minor in Bioengineering, students must be enrolled in the minor program and complete a minimum total of 18 credits and all of its requirements, as well as the requirements of the major program of study; and have attained an average grade point of at least 2.15 in courses taken within the minor program.

For credit transfer, students can transfer a maximum total of 6 credits to the minor program. Courses accepted for transfer credits must normally be at a level equivalent to HKUST courses of 2000-level or above taken in 2011-12 and after, or at 100-level or above taken prior to 2011-12.

For students admitted in 2012-13 or after, at least 9 credits out of the total credits required by the minor program should be single-counted within the minor and are not used to fulfill any other requirements for graduation except the 120-credit degree requirement.

Students may use no more than 6 credits earn from courses offered in pure online delivery mode to satisfy the graduation requirements of a degree program. This 6-credit limit does not apply to credits obtained through the credit transfer procedures of the University.

Application

Students must declare their intention to enroll in the minor program no earlier than the first regular term of their second year of study but no later than the last day of the add/drop period in the first regular term of their final year of study. Students who wish to withdraw from the minor program should apply before the last day of add/drop period in the last regular term of their study.

Application form is obtainable from the Academic Records and Registration Office (ARRO). Students should complete the application form, pass it to the major department for approval, and submit the approved form to the Bioengineering Program (BIEN) Office for endorsement. Students will be notified of the application results in writing by ARRO.
