The International Electrochemistry Summit 2026 cum Post-Conference Satellite Meeting of the 77th Annual Meeting of ISE, and The Young Academy of Sciences Summit Concludes Successfully Leading Experts Discuss AI-Empowered Electrochemical Technologies to Accelerate the Development of Next-Generation Energy Storage Technologies

The International Electrochemistry Summit 2026 cum Post-Conference Satellite Meeting of the 77th Annual Meeting of ISE, and the 9th Young Academy of Sciences Summit (YASS) Sub-Conference was successfully held at HKUST from 12 to 14 September 2026.

The three-day high-profile event was jointly hosted by:

  • HKUST Energy Institute
  • The Hong Kong Young Academy of Sciences (YASHK)
  • HKUST’s Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE)
  • Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry (CAS) – HKUST Joint Laboratory for Hydrogen Energy
  • InnoHK Hong Kong Center for Renewable Energy and Storage

The summit brought together over 50 world-renowned electrochemistry scholars and attracted approximately 300 faculty, students, and industry professionals, serving as a world-class platform to accelerate next-generation energy storage technologies.

At the opening ceremony, Prof. Minhua SHAO, Founding Member and Honorary Secretary of YASHK, Head and Chair Professor of our Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE), and Director of the Energy Institute at HKUST highlighted the event's strategic importance.

"This summit has created an academic bridge connecting the global electrochemistry research community, providing fertile ground for interdisciplinary collaboration... As Hong Kong rapidly builds itself into an international innovation and technology centre, high-level academic exchanges like this position the city as a key force driving global transformation in electrochemistry."
— Prof. Minhua SHAO

A lineup of world-leading scientists delivered keynote presentations on cutting-edge developments:

  • Prof. John IRVINE (University of St Andrews, UK) shared breakthrough research in sodium-ion chemistry for sustainable batteries and global carbon neutrality.
  • Prof. Zhong-Qun TIAN (Academician of CAS, Xiamen University) shared visionary insights on how artificial intelligence is set to empower and transform future electrochemical systems.
  • Prof. Jean-Marie TARASCON (Collège de France & Senior Visiting Fellow of HKUST IAS) presented on using chemistry to design smarter, more sustainable lithium/sodium-ion batteries.
  • Other distinguished keynotes included Prof. Thomas Justus SCHMIDT (Switzerland), Prof. Vojislav R. STAMENKOVIC (USA), Academician Andy Xueliang SUN (Ningbo), and Prof. Chunzhong LI (Shanghai).

The event concluded with highly interactive panel discussions focusing on battery safety, electrochemical energy materials, and the practical implementation of AI in fundamental electrochemical research.
