HKUST AI System Delivers Comprehensive Cancer Diagnosis: SmartPath Intelligently Analyzes Complex Pathology Images to Support Diagnosis and Prognosis, Enabling Precise Personalized Treatment
A research team led by Prof. Hao CHEN, Director of the Collaboration Center for Medical and Engineering Innovation, and Assistant Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, has launched SmartPath, an advanced AI system at HKUST that enhances cancer diagnosis and treatment.
SmartPath streamlines pathology workflows by providing integrated support for clinical diagnosis, biomarker quantification, and treatment response assessment across various cancers. Trained on over half a million pathology images, it excels in diagnosing prevalent cancers such as lung and breast cancer, and is designed to improve diagnostic accuracy and personalize treatment plans.
Currently undergoing clinical validation in top hospitals, SmartPath has demonstrated over 95% accuracy in recent trials, promising a new standard in intelligent, personalized medicine. The team is also working to expand its capabilities to include more cancer types and improve predictive models.
Part of the research outcomes underpinning SmartPath were recently published in the top-tier journal Nature Biomedical Engineering.
