Prof. Minhua SHAO Returns Triumphant as the Recipient of Prestigious ECS Energy Technology Division Research Award
Prof. Minhua SHAO, Head of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at HKUST, has returned from Seattle, Washington, after being formally honored at the 249th Electrochemical Society (ECS) Meeting with the Energy Technology Division Research Award. He is the first scholar from a Chinese university to receive this honor since the award’s establishment in 1992.
A Highly Competitive Honor in Electrochemical Energy
Among the most competitive honors in the field of electrochemical energy, the award was established in 1992 to recognize scholars who have made outstanding contributions to energy technology research. Eligibility requires nominees to be active ECS members with a proven record of impactful publications and leadership in advancing the discipline. Each nomination undergoes rigorous peer review, and only one recipient is selected annually, underscoring the exceptional difficulty of attaining this recognition. Awardees are also invited to publish their work in the Journal of The Electrochemical Society, further amplifying the global impact of their research.
Historic Milestone for Chinese Academia
Prof. Shao’s achievement is historic: he is the first scholar from a Chinese university to receive the award since its inception. His pioneering work in electrocatalysis and sustainable energy systems was celebrated at the Annual Division Business Meeting and Luncheon in Seattle, where he was presented with a commemorative scroll, a cash prize of USD $2,000, and continued membership in the ECS Energy Technology Division.
The award ceremony not only marked a personal triumph for Prof. Shao but also highlighted his role in elevating HKUST’s global standing in energy research. His return from Seattle symbolizes both international esteem and the Department’s commitment to innovation that resonates worldwide.
