HKUST-Developed SmartCare Shifts Clinical Focus to Patient Care

A research team led by Prof. Hao CHEN, an Assistant Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Division of Life Science at HKUST and Director of Smart Lab, has introduced SmartCare, an AI platform that transforms patient journeys from triage to treatment, at its on-campus clinic. This initiative begins with a six-month pilot study open to over 15,000 students, faculty, and staff.

SmartCare, developed from HKUST’s MedDr model, streamlines clinical workflows, enhances patient-provider interactions, and reduces administrative tasks, allowing doctors to focus on personalized care. Key features include intelligent pre-visit triage, an AI-powered consultation assistant, and medical document automation.

Prof. Chen emphasized SmartCare's advanced capabilities in handling complex medical queries and its integration into clinical workflows. Dr. Justin CHENG, SmartCare’s CEO, noted that it allows doctors to prioritize patient connections by minimizing administrative burdens. Prof. Samuel Chung-Toi YU highlighted the pilot's role in translating research into practical healthcare solutions.

The pilot study invites campus users to participate and provide feedback, and a partnership has been formed to integrate SmartCare with PanopticAI’s monitoring technology to improve service efficiency at a new ambulatory care center.
