HKUST CBE Strengthens Academic Ties with Fuzhou University through Joint Forum
The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE) at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) recently concluded a successful academic visit to Fuzhou University (FZU), held on June 10–11, 2025. The event fostered deeper collaboration and knowledge exchange between the two institutions, bringing together leading scientists to explore frontier developments in chemical and biological engineering.
At the opening ceremony, FZU Party Secretary Prof. Guolong CHEN welcomed participants and underscored the strategic importance of inter-institutional partnerships in driving innovation. Prof. Jiannian YAO, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered an inspiring keynote titled “An Interdisciplinary Future for Chemical Research,” highlighting how cross-disciplinary collaboration serves as a catalyst for scientific breakthroughs and transformative discovery.
The symposium featured 15 invited talks from faculty of HKUST, FZU, and China University of Petroleum, covering key themes in advanced materials, catalysis, and biotechnology. Distinguished FZU speakers included Vice Presidents Prof. Xinchen WANG and Prof. Lilong JIANG, Prof. Yuwu ZHONG, Dean of the College of Chemistry, and Prof. Haibo ZHU, Prof. Chunhua LU, Prof. Zhonghui LIN. Prof. Xi WANG also delivered a talk.
On the CBE side, Prof. Jean-Marie TARASCON shared insights on “Entering into the Privacy of Batteries via Optical Sensing in Real Life Applications”; Prof. Zhengtang LUO, explored the applications of “Two-Dimensional Materials for Microelectronics”; Prof. Fei SUN presented innovative approaches in “Engineering Biology for New Materials”; Prof. Richard LAKERVELD spoke on “The Design and Manufacture of Pharmaceutical Cocrystals for Enhanced Aqueous Solubility”; Prof. Yuanyuan ZHOU discussed challenges in “Perovskite Microstructural Disorder”. Prof. Yoonseob KIM introduced novel “Ionic Covalent Organic Framework Solid-State Electrolytes”; and Prof. Yuxing YAO addressed “Interface Biology with Soft Functional Materials”.
This successful forum has strengthened academic ties between HKUST and mainland institutions, creating valuable opportunities for future collaborative research and innovation in interdisciplinary fields.
