CBE Welcomes New Cohort with a Vibrant and Energetic Undergraduate Orientation

On September 2, 2026, the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE) gathered for a vibrant and exciting evening to welcome its newest cohort of undergraduate students. Held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Global Graduate Tower on campus, the Undergraduate (UG) Orientation brought together incoming students, faculty members, and student representatives for a memorable evening of connection, games, and celebration.

The evening officially commenced with a warm opening by Prof. Terence WONG, Associate Head and Associate Professor, UG Programs Coordinator, who welcomed the fresh faces and set an inviting tone for the night. This was followed by inspiring opening speeches from Prof. Minhua SHAO, Head of the Department, and Prof. Henry LAM, Professor and Associate Dean of Engineering (Undergraduate Studies). Both speakers shared encouraging words and valuable insights, motivating the incoming students as they embark on this exciting new chapter of their academic journeys.

The excitement continued with a lively introduction by the CBE Student Society, giving the new undergraduates a first-hand look at the supportive peer community, resources, and upcoming student-led activities awaiting them. To help the students break the ice and build early friendships, the society hosted a series of fun games that quickly filled the room with laughter. This was immediately followed by a high-spirited Kahoot trivia game designed to help the freshmen familiarize themselves with the campus layout, departmental secrets, and the unique history of CBE.

A major highlight of the evening was a delicious Chinese buffet paired with refreshments, allowing students, faculty, and staff to mingle, share stories, and chat informally in a relaxed setting.

The energy in the room reached its absolute peak during the highly anticipated "Scramble" game. Host Prof. Terence WONG kicked off the challenge by announcing superlatives like "The Biggest," "The Longest," "The Highest," or "The Most.". The competitive fun transitioned into a classic round of BINGO, keeping the high energy going with more exciting prizes and anticipation.

As the evening drew to a close, a large group photo was taken to capture the smiles and shared memories of everyone in attendance. The orientation wrapped up on a high note, leaving the new students energized, connected, and fully prepared for their future academic endeavors.

The department extends its warmest welcome to the Class of 2026 and wishes all our undergraduate students a successful, inspiring, and rewarding journey ahead at CBE!
