Prof Minhua Shao is appointed Head of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering
Prof Minhua SHAO, Chair Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering, EI Director, and Cheong Ying Chan Professor of Energy Engineering and Environment, is appointed Head of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering effective from 1 August 2023 to succeed Prof I-ming HSING upon his stepping down from the headship position by 31 July 2023.
Prof Shao received his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 2006. He joined HKUST as an unsubstantiated Associate Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering in 2014 (tenured in 2017), promoted to full Professor in 2019 and was conferred the Chair Professor title in 2022. Prof Shao is a world-renowned electrochemist with research focuses on electrochemical energy conversion and storage. His international reputation is well-established, evidenced by his winning of the International Outstanding Young Chemical Engineer Award from the Chemical Industry and Engineering Society of China and Global Academy of Chinese Chemical Engineers in 2022, and being elected as Fellow of The Electrochemical Society this year. Currently as the Director of HKUST Energy Institute, he has garnered exceptional administrative experience in directing research missions and pursuing research endeavours. His strong connections locally and with the Mainland enable his effective alignment of the Department with the University’s vision and strategy for the GZ campus and the Greater Bay Area.
