Department Bids a Fond Farewell to Prof. Yongli MI at Retirement Dinner
On Friday, June 26, the department gathered for a special evening to celebrate the remarkable career and retirement of Professor Yongli MI. Held at One Cuisine in Plaza Ascot, Fo Tan, the farewell dinner was attended by around 38 faculty members, colleagues, and staff who came together to honor Prof. Mi’s decades of dedication to Chemical Engineering.
The evening officially began in the evening with a warm opening speech by Prof. Minhua SHAO, Head of the Department. On behalf of the entire group, Prof. Shao presented Prof. Mi with a special farewell gift: a football adorned with signatures from department members, accompanied by a heartfelt greeting card.
The tributes continued with speeches from former Heads of the Department. Prof. Po Lock YUE, Founding Head and Professor Emeritus; Prof. Guohua CHEN, former Head and Chair Professor; and Prof. I-Ming HSING, former Head and Professor, took the stage to share their fond memories and express their deep appreciation for Prof. Mi’s contributions over the years. A large group photo was then taken to commemorate the gathering of all participants.
A true highlight of the night was a captivating presentation given by Prof. Mi himself, titled "Teaching Chemical Engineering in 30 Years." Staying true to his engaging teaching style, Prof. Mi demonstrated how fundamental Chemical Engineering knowledge can be found in everyday life, using basic tools and examples like balloons, lemons, ice, and oranges to explain complex concepts.
Following the presentation, several faculty members and colleagues took the opportunity to offer their personal well-wishes and share stories about working alongside Prof. Mi.
The memorable evening concluded with warm individual photo sessions with Prof. Mi and a series of wonderful singing performances by Prof. Hanyu GAO, Prof. Frank LAM, Prof. Terence WONG, and Prof. I-Ming HSING, bringing the celebration to a joyful and harmonious close.
The department extends its deepest gratitude to Prof. Yongli MI for his 30 years of inspiring teaching, research, and friendship. We wish him a healthy, joyful, and fulfilling retirement!
