Prof. Hnin Y. Y. NYEIN received the APBEC Young Scholar Award

Prof. Hnin Y. Y. NYEIN, an Assistant Professor of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at HKUST, has been honored as part of the inaugural batch of APBEC Young Scholars. On December 10th, she delivered an invited presentation in Singapore and received the award from Prof. I-Ming HSING, President of the Asia Pacific Biomedical Engineering Consortium (APBEC) and Prof. C. T. LIM, chair of the ICBME conference.

Prof. Nyein earned her bachelor’s degree and PhD in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley and joined Stanford University as a postdoctoral fellow upon graduation. She is a recipient of Innovators Under 35 Asia Pacific 2021 from MIT Technology Review, and her research was published in acclaimed scientific journals such as Nature, Nature Communications, and Science Advances. Prof. Nyein joined HKUST as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE) since 2022.

Prof. Nyein’s research focus is on flexible wearable biosensors designed for personalized healthcare. Her prominent works on wearable sweat sensors make use of resting sweat as a constant non-invasive biofluid source for assessing health metrics at the molecular level. The device gives a robust and accurate analysis of sweat biomarkers related to the user’s health information, and can be mass-produced cost-effectively, allowing users to capture and monitor their biomolecular information remotely and keep track of their wellness continuously.

The APBEC Young Scholar Award, a prestigious recognition presented by the Asia Pacific Biomedical Engineering Consortium (APBEC), is designed to honor and support exceptional early-career researchers of the member universities who have made significant contributions to the field of biomedical engineering.
